In the last few seasons of impeccable, almost ungodly attendance by Joe and I, this season has been quite the opposite. This week, we were missing 3 out of 4 of our ladies and quite a few of our guys due to sickness (stay safe out there people). And on top of this, I saw the most frightening sight walking up on the fields. A wild Max out there 20 minutes early doing warmups and coaching a group of 4-5 people. Knowing Max’s amazing skill with a disc in his hands, I knew this coaching was sure to be an inspiration for this team. But we all know who the true coach of league is. His name: Chris Oster.
We knew we were in great shape with our trusty coach there. We were also blessed with the presence of Larissa, who missed the first week and was our sole lady for this game And as expected, Coach whipped us into shape good and well. We started the game with a solid 5 of us there. Luckily, we were playing against a Scoober Snacks also decimated by attendance issues and they only had 6. The game started off on a lovely note for us with a first throw Joe huck to me for the score. We would set up a zone since we didn’t want to run around the field a lot. Actually, change that. We did not want to run around the field at all. So we’d set up our silly little zone and the Scoober Snacks would score after at least 30 throws, making it 1-1. I felt good about the zone making them throw so many throws to beat us. But then, we look at the horizon, and we see not 1 Horror Flick player, but 2 glowing in the sunset. Paul and Will showed up and we would be able to actually have 7 on the field, which usually helps to win a game. Soon, the Scoober Snacks would have Jon show up, making it a good ol’ game of 7v7 savage frisbee. I usually like to refer to this as the best kind of frisbee. Unfortunately, with the absences of Dave, Jia, and Clyde, the Scoober Snacks would not be able to keep up with us. We easily took half playing zone all game and would end up winning the game 15-6? Maybe 15-7?
With only 7 of us there, stats were PLENTIFUL and going around to everyone. I love hyping up my teammates and with how amazing everyone played, this will be the easiest report ever. First, let’s start with the obvious. This man Plant had 8 scores for us. I mean, nothing needs to be added to this. This is pure insanity. He was all over the field and always found so much space in the end zone. He caught questionable hammers and even managed 2 D’s as well. Last week, I said Paul got his first of many scores, and this was absolutely correct. He rallied 2 more scores and even got his first assist of the season. He’s looking very comfortable catching unders for us and making reliable dumps back to handlers. Will Byrd was electric all game, playing every point, getting a humongous D and throwing some zesty hammers for scores. Last week, we were really lacking hammers and Will led the way in realizing hammers = scores. It’s really the simplest of frisbee math. Larissa was amazing as always. She got a ton of unders and made some really tough catches that probably should’ve been thrown better to her. She is another super reliable player with the disc and she’s got hands of steel. Coach Oster had a 3x2x1 statline and probably the best throw of the day to me. He juiced a backhand huck to me perfectly in stride and landed me right in the back of the end zone for the score to take half. And Joe did Joe things. 6 assists and 2 D’s is just another day in the office for him. He did not throw enough hammers, but everything else he did was lovely. More hammers Joe, more hammers. On the Scoober side, Max and Shea did a great job of being patient threw the zone and working it efficiently. Max did get me with a few no-looks for scores which was pretty cool. They also had Savannah (I think this is the right name) working in the zone and her pump fakes were incredible and made me jump for it every time she threw one.
I think this was a good day for our confidence. After 2 rough losses last week, we were eager to get on the win column. More importantly than winning, we are working on creating the most bangin’ Halloween-themed playlist Gainesville Ultimate has ever seen (Thanks Ellie!). If you ever find yourselves lucky enough to play against us, it may be difficult to not dance with all the different bops that are going to be playing. We’re officially 1-0 when playing the Horror Flicks playlist on the sideline and we’re hoping to keep it rolling next week.
