Captains Reports | Game 2 Royal Blue over Charcoal
Final Score 15-7
Week 2 of league is always an interesting one. While Week 1 brings with it either the joy of starting on the right foot with a win or the sorrows of starting the season with an L, Week 2 has you wondering where your team really is heading.
As I started warming up I already knew that my co-captain Jenny was going to be missing, but I also noticed that Fletcher, Tom and Alethia, and a couple others were nowhere to be seen yet. I looked across the field and saw the likes of Ryan Goetz, Josh Barker, Evan Grillon, and Jill Kubisek – a squad of hustlers who I knew wouldn’t let us take it easy. Nevertheless, Steven and Lauren Weisberg made the trek with their baby in tow, shortly followed by Tom and Alethia with their kids, and we soon had a solid squad ready to fight.
I ended up winning the toss, looked at Adub to see how we should start, and he gave me this look like, “Are you really asking me that? Offense.” I obliged, called for offense, and rested easy knowing we had a set of chilly handlers ready to fight through the windy day.
Game time
The game started and next thing I knew we were up 3-0. That’s when Fletcher showed up. Next it was 3-1 (coincidence??). From there we trade points with charcoal for a few points until we broke again and took halftime 8-4. Charcoal threw some man defenses and a lot of zone defenses at us, but Joel and Adub were too much to handle. Joel Buenestro was truly an unstoppable handler, always keeping the disc moving and crashing through the zone.
After half time we took another break score. This is where things got really good for team Royal. Some highlight moments include:
– Adub and Joel basically walking the disc up the field – I’m pretty sure they never even established a pivot foot
– Fletcher scoring 4 goals in a game for the first time since 2010
– Cheese (Joshua Rich) getting a D in his FIRST GAME EVER!! (shout out the Chic Fil A downtown!)
– On one desperation huck Michaela Sciandra was able to launch up and catch a trailing disc for a layout out catch to set up a scoring opportunity (do hockey assists count in Ultimate yet?). Tom Brown showed off his veteran knowledge of the game by being right behind her to offer a reset dump and toss in the score.
– Michaela racking up 4 D’s! 2 of them on one point! On the last point Michaela played deep deep in our zone, get the D in the endzone on a big huck (only to have it sent back), and then proceeded to get a RUNTHROUGH D on the endzone line!
– Immediately following that block Michaela high-tailed it to the other endzone, Adub set a monster huck from endzone to endzone, and Fletcher went coast to coast to help pick up the game winning score.
– Adub also threw two of the prettiest IO break-throws (one backhand and the other a flick) that found Michael in/near the endzone for a score
Make no mistake, though, Charcoal are no chumps. Sunday proved to be a day that we had everything click, and the windy day seemed to knock charcoal off their groove. Ryan Goetz is nearly unstoppable whether you throw man defense or zone defense his way, and if Josh Barker or Evan Grillon are feeling good watch out for some dangerous hucks to ruin your day (especially those IO flicks over the stack). Shout out to Brycen Vest who just moved into town in the last 6 months and has firmly rooted himself in Gainesville league. Brycen showed up to the Skillz N Drillz sessions Sunday, and quickly showed his abilities on the field during the game. Keep it up Brycen, you’re going to be a star someday!
