Here we again. Everyone’s favorite time of year. Summer league. Who knows if you’ll be playing in 95 degree weather or if you get there and have to wait an hour for the rain to pass? Either way, we should have a really competitive and fun season with an amazingly stacked draft class. With the casino theme, I’ve already heard rumors of people betting on teams, so I’m here to go through the odds for every team and what place the teams will get. And who knows? Maybe Gainesville Ultimate will start encouraging sports betting. Let’s get into it.
8) Texas: +5000
Sorry team Texas, but someone has to be last place. This team is honestly not bad at all, but they’re simply missing firepower. When I look at this team, nothing about them scares me. They have amazing throwers with Steven and Fletcher, but league is heavily decided by deep threats. In a league where college players and 6 footers are everywhere, you need to have someone who can match up. And I just don’t think this team has that.
7) Lucky Rollers: +4500
Despite having one of the prettiest color jerseys, I don’t think this team will do too great this season. They can really dominate on the ladies side with Naomi and Jay, but I think their men will struggle against other teams. Getting Cooper in the 1st round was a great pick for them and he will definitely bring their stats up on the hair game, but I still think this team will struggle.
6) JAK Pot: +3600
This is an extremely interesting team. They have arguably the best duo in the league with Kate and Dustin, so they are definitely not out of contention to win it all. I often feel that new captains struggle to win in this league and that’s the way I feel about this team. If they’re serious, they can make a serious run. But I see the same issue as the last 2 teams. Struggling with top male-matching players in the league. I thing every season has a team that masters the zone and goes a long way, and I think this could be the team to really annoy other teams with a hard zone.
5) White (Unnamed team): +2200
Max, Harin, and Shea, please do us all a favor and name your team. Max and Jack is probably one of the scarier duos in the league, and I think this team will rely on Jack really heavily. The question is how often will he come? If they want a serious shot, he will have to show up more than just to beat Joe and Billy. I really think this team has a great combination of experience/poise and absolute grinders in players like Harin and Ayden. You just got to have someone pushing to really win, and I think this team will be a bit too relaxed to go all the way.
T4) Royal Flush: +1500
I’m still confused as to why this team named themselves Royal Flush and didn’t take Royal Blue, but we’re going to just move on and forget about that. This team is purely amazing on defense and super experienced. Billy, Pat, Danny, Josh are all beasts in the defensive space and their ladies (Ani/Rosie/etc.) are no different. The only downside I can see to this team is Billy may have to do a lot of work in the handler space, but I think he enjoys that, so they’ll be fine.
T4) Pink Slips: +1500
A newly rebranded team it seems like the Pink Slips are fully embracing their color. This is another team that is just mean defensively. A really great balance of youth in Thomas and Billy combo’d with amazing throwers and experience in Jared and Schimmel. This team also has amazing ladies that are workhorses (Jess, Regan, Jo) on the offensive end. I think this team is currently tied with Royal Flush, but maybe give them a slight edge due to the large number of lefties. And we all know you can’t make a call on a lefty.
2) Lime Shock (Short Stack?): +300
At this point, Zach and Michelle have clearly established themselves as the best captains in league. They care the most and that goes a long way to inspire a team to victory. As with every Zach-selected team, this is a team full of really smart players that won’t make mistakes. Every once in a while, just draft a wild card who will rip a 50-yard hammer and live a little. Unfortunately, that will not be this season. The only thing holding this team back from being number 1 is the Switzers being unavailable for finals.
1)Oh Craps: -100
Number 1 ranked team. Not number 1 ranked team name. Although Joe’s teams have struggled these past few seasons, this is by far the most talented team on paper. The core 4 of Sam, Joe, Nes, and Ellie is already elite and then they stacked their roster with so much talent that this was an obvious choice for me. He also was able to snag Ben and Bonnie super late in the draft, which was an absolute steal. The only concern I have for this team is that there are a lot of people who like to have the disc in their hands a lot. If they find a way to share the disc, this is an obvious win for Oh Craps and they will win it all. If you don’t believe me, look at their roster again.
If you want to find me on the field, I will be taking side bets every week. At pre-season, I bet that multiple teams wouldn’t have full rosters and the payout was $300. Please bet responsibly and I’ll see you out on the field!
