Greetings citizens of the Milky Way! Welcome to another issue of the Infinity Times!! The only newspaper in the galaxy to exclusively focus on Gainesville Ultimate, right here on little ole Terra. Today we see how Team Thanos, the very embodiment of Lord Thanos’ awestriking might, has fared.
It just so happened that this week was a little extra full of life. All sorts of things from babies, to Spring Break, family, work, even rusty nails conspired to hinder the mighty members of Team Thanos, leaving us with exactly 5 people come 2:05 PM, which makes for slightly less than awestriking. Like, awestriking – 1. Team Vector, ready to rumble as always, had their full complement of powerful and directional nerds.
Unable to field a full fist of stones, we had no choice but to concede the match 🙁
However, all was not yet lost! The timely arrival of Alison and Lukas, combined with a temporary loan of the two and only Will Byrd and Mike Ross from Team Yzma, with a little sprinkle of the return of Erik (who played with us temporarily during the pre-season) on top, we achieved a full fist and two extra fingers! As a result, we were able to play Yzma on equal (at least in terms of numbers) footing.
It became quickly apparent that we would not be achieving Lord Thanos’ standards of perfection this time around. We averaged about 1 point for each of Yzma’s 3, closing that ratio to 1 to 2 by the end. Although the score was never close, we managed a respectable 11-4 loss.
Despite our scoring ratio, there were still many exemplary offensive moments worth revisiting and getting re-excited over. I would say our Offensive MVPs go to Lyle, Erik, Alison, and Mike from Yzma. Lyle busted out not one, not two, but (at least) three hammers that were key in either breaking upfield through the Yzma Zone. Erik was constantly in motion, almost instinctively moving to areas where he was open. Alison was a force both in the back as handles but also scored half of our points. Mike from Yzma, despite being on loan, was instrumental in several key drives. He caught not one but two of Lyle’s break side hammers, followed up by a perfectly executed flick to the center to Jake, which after a quick pass to Plant ended up as our third point! So, thanks Mike for being an honorary member of Team Thanos for the game!!
One more thing I noted: as the game went on, our players in the handler space (shout out to Lyle, Plant, Alison, and Lukas and probably some others if I’m forgetting) got much more comfortable with swinging the disc. While many of our forward continuations ultimately didn’t end up going all the way to the end zone, by the end of the game we were having several sequences of swinging before making a pass forward. And they’d work too! Just an observation from a sideline bound cheer captain. Good job y’all!! Also, shout-out to Jacob for getting his first League assist! WAY TO GET ON THE BOARD JACOB!!!
Similarly on the defense side, we managed to rack up a not insignificant number of D’s (6 to be exact). Plant was in top form, chasing down a floaty sideline pass to smack it away with a sweep of his hand. Lukas was also in it with two back to back D’s of his own in the final point of the game. Erik and Lyle also got on the board with D’s of their own. Although we could not stop the inexorable tide of Yzma, we still managed to build a few sand walls before they washed away our sand castle.
Like my cheap knockoff of Lord Thanos’ magnificent Infinity Gauntlet, a few gems fell out today. But never fear! They have been found and will be back stronger than ever next week! And you’ll be able to find all the action right here at. the. Infinity. Tiiiiiiiiimmmeeesssss!!! Have a great week y’all, we’ll see you next time!!!!
