After several weeks off from ultimate and still battling chest congestion from a cold two weeks prior, I was pretty winded after setting up the fields last week, which didn’t bode well for my ability to carry the team on my back like I have been the last few weeks (this is sarcasm, in case that wasn’t clear).
But, as I rolled up to our sideline, I saw the Diehl DePaul Squad, Jiggins (who assured me Steven was coming) and more male matching players than we’d had in any game before (Manny, Phil, Tomas, Jake, Evan “Milkman” Grillon, and Tom all showed up to play). I looked confidently at Dan and said, “You ready for this?” And…. he shook his head. Our fearless patriarch was battling several instances of “my body is old and doesn’t work like it used to” and wasn’t sure he’d be able to take the field (spoiler, he did play a few) So I knew it was on my wheezy a$$ to try and lead the team to victory.
We looked good in the first half, trading points, creating turns (although not capitalizing on them when we needed to), and moving the disc well against Workshop. The sure throws of Adub, Zach, and Michelle (s/o for playing EVERY DANG POINT) were difficult to stop, and they put quite a few dimes to the end zone where the only person who could make the play was their receiver, but we kept pace with them until halftime.
Not so, in the second half. At this point Zach was battling me on who could wheeze the loudest, and I like to think I won that battle, but that’s about all we won. Workshop was grooving and House of Dragonflies was swooning. We scored one more out of half, but they ran away with it 11-6. HoD was a little off kilter this week, but I think we’ll be able to go toe to toe with anyone if/when we’re all feeling good. I always felt Workshop was one of the strongest teams in league, and, if we’re fortunate enough to make it into the A bracket and keep winning, I have no doubt our paths will cross again.
The Bennifer’s fabulous player award goes to Ryan “Robert” Plant. Dude was everywhere and I feel like must have had half their scores. Well played Ryan, well played Workshop.
We absolutely crushed Tax 11-0….. by forfeit. Get rekt =) For real though, sorry we didn’t get to play y’all but I was pretty done after the first game. Hope to be in far better condition this week!
Cheers,
Roseman
