Week 4 – Cutterflies get Dumped by Murderous Hornets

While our W/L may not be as good as other teams, we are absolutely crushing everyone else in terms of attendance. With all 4 FMPs present and only 2 MMPs missing, we were primed to widdle our opponents down with fresh legs. Unfortunately, our fresh legs didn’t come into the first game ready to go against the nearly savage Dump Beetles and we got off to another slow start, going down several breaks early in the first half. The game plan for DB was simple, huck the disc to either the taller Alek or the more athletic Sam, and it worked well for all of the first half. On the offensive side of the disc, we were plagued by dropsies and throws directly to the other team. The second half we played much better and had the Dump Beetles sweating towards the end, with a couple of back-to-back breaks, but unfortunately the first half deficit was too much to overcome and we lost, 9-11.

For DB, reliable handling from Sam, Danny, and Clyde caused us problems and several huck catches / goals from Jenna finished us off. For us, Laura found herself unguardable in the endzone several times and had several skying catches to save possession of the disc.

Game 2 against the Murder Hornets was a much different story for most of the game. We were throwing to our teammates and catching uncontested passes, but the defensive pressure from Ben & Co was amped up a bit from the first game. Both teams had trouble figuring out which field we were playing on, with several cutters running 5+ yards out of bounds and then getting the disc. At one point, Carsten tried to cover me even though I wasn’t one of the 7 people on the field and was standing several yards out of bounds (I let him know as quickly as possible that I wasn’t on). Weird game. The score stayed close with us in front for pretty much the entire game. With the rest of the games done, we found ourselves receiving on double-game point in front of a very large crowd of spectators. The pressure of the crowd apparently got to both teams, as we both had crazy throwaways / drops from our usually rock-solid players (three for would be game-winning goals). After giving them 3 chances to break, Carsten put up a stall 9, break-side blade to a falling down Emory for the win.

The ladies were the difference maker for MH this game. With only Emory and Bonnie present, we had trouble matching up on most of our 2 FMP lady lines, and they took advantage every chance they could. For us, despite not making the stat line, Nes was the pivotal piece that kept the disc moving for us. Nevin also had an excellent game both throwing and cutting.
