With all of our planned absences behind us, Pop Quiz was looking to begin our undefeated second half of the season against Shea’s Scoober Snacks and Billy’s Horrorbly Outnumbered Flicks. Despite windy conditions, running zone against Scoober’s loaded handler core was out of the question. The one point we did try it, they did short handler cuts all the way down the field for an easy goal. An early upwind break had me a bit nervous as we were having a lot of trouble moving the disc. Thankfully, Jared finally showed up to give the extra oomph we needed with our throws and we quickly got our break back. We had a lot of trouble with under passes going down wind which led to a bunch of punts from yours truly, while SSS had trouble connecting on upwind deep shots. This led to a lot of 10+ turnover points that we eventually scored. We eventually took half on serve after Bueno saved me with a sick layout catch on an elevator backhand that the wind carried away. First point out of half, they held going downwind, setting up what would end up being a very long double game point. After many turns we got into the redzone with only a minute to spare before hard cap. I threw a pass to Emily that we thought was a goal, but a contested “not in” call would result in a subsequent turnover. Thankfully, we got the disc back after hard cap went off and worked it the length of the field to finish out the game.
Dave and I covered each other for much of the game and it was a fun back and forth with each of us getting the better of the other multiple times. Our ladies continued to be our designated goal scorers combining to catch over half of them.
Game 2 was against a very depleted Billy Field led squad, comprised of 6 guys and Larissa minus an appendix. With most of our roster in attendance, we would be playing 5-2 against 5-0 on the downwind side and 6-1 against 6-0 on the upwind side. We offered to let them play 6 at several points late in the game, but I think sideline extraordinare Will Byrd was happy to take some points off. Not much to talk about game wise here, it was a runaway from the beginning, as it should be playing several players down. We would win 11-4.
Highlights for Horror Flicks: Oster throwing a break side flick huck ridiculously far sideways around Jared’s mark that came back in bounds for an easy Billy goal. Howard constantly rolling around on the ground trying to save discs. Paul’s ninja huck over my mark to Plant.
Highlights for Pop Quiz: Michael, front runner for Rookie of the Year, could not be stopped except by pesky out of bounds lines. He snuck behind Billy for 4 goals, mostly on rocket hammers from Jared. Jared set the bar high with hammer goals, but Manny and I threw some of our own.
