Today, the Pink Slips had an almost full roster, missing only 2 of our ladies, but having all of our men in attendance. We were feeling confident coming in as we had already beaten Royal Flush in the pre-season. They also had more people and looked slightly more intimidating, but we still were confident.
I won’t lie to you all, this was a pretty ugly game. The first few points were marathon points with tons of turns and D’s (mostly turns). If you look at the stats page and wonder why these 2 teams both have so many D’s, things were a little sloppy in the first half. We just started out rough. We were forcing throws and cutting aimlessly and would find ourselves down 5-8 at half. If you know anything about Billy-led teams over the past few seasons, I frequently find my team down big at half. I give a beautiful speech at halftime about how we need to make updates, and we come back and win. This was no different this game. We would go on a 10-3 run in the 2nd half to win the game 15-11 on an uneventful last point. It was an oopsie moment by Royal Flush, who thought my blue shirt was royal blue and gave me the disc for free for the easiest bookends of my life.
We had some big highlights, mainly our 2nd half defense. We had 20 (yes 20) D’s on the day, with 10 players getting at least 1 D. Co-captain Matthew made his presence felt with 3 and Anthony had 2. 2 key pieces on D, who we were missing last week. Jared did Jared things with 7 assists and 4 D’s. Jess and Reagan commanded space with their magnificent popping. My favorite plays of the game were a beautiful Nan catch just inches above the ground for an amazing snag. And some bozo had a stall 9 moment and just threw it breakside to the first person I saw. Royal Flush got a D, but Weston had an amazing layout to stay with the play and catch it. Weston also had a catch (drop) in the end zone that was bobbled and then caught between his legs as he was falling. Ultimate hype moment. The Schrock bros are definitely making their case as steal of the draft because Trevor was also straight ballin out there. Only technically logged 2 D’s on the day, but put great pressure on the other team the whole game. Also, has sticky hands on the offensive end. On the opposite side, Sam was a particularly good cutter the whole game. He’s just fast, and that’ll go a long way to getting open. Billy, Danny, Rosie, and Pat were cool and collected on the handler side as well.
We are happy to be 1-0, but still got a lot of room to grow. We had some pretty sick highlights, so I believe we’ll be a contender this season once we get that much needed chemistry with each other. Some gambling addict has us ranked tied for 4th, and I’m certainly not buying that. If nothing else, this hopefully moved us up to 3rd since we were tied with Royal Flush in the predictions.
