Nuggets beat the Spartans, but get struck down by the throws of Love

Picture this: it’s rainy and gross. Yes, it’s Florida, that’s normal. So that was our Sunday.

After some major struggles last week, the Nuggets bounced back in fierce style, opening the game with 3 straight points and taking the first half against the Myrmidons (which after googling are apparently a bunch of badasses who follow Achilles, this tracks). Much of our early game success was from spreading the disc around as much as possible, including some particularly excellent defensive plays from Mike Ross and Pat Gettino. However after taking our 6-2 half, the Myrmidons came out in force. Both Brandon and Clyde started working our Zone D apart. Big shoutout to Dheeraj who displayed some excellent popping with a lot of patience after catching the disc. MMD took the first 2 points after half and suddenly it was a much closer 6-4. Thankfully we were able to regroup and, after some excellent short-cutting scores from Bueno and Manny, managed to pull out an 11-5 win

Game 2 opened strong as well, with the Nugs taking the first 2 points. However we then fall off our game, losing 6 of the next 7 points and falling town 3-6 at half. Despite some very solid man offense and D’s from 5 separate players this game, Athrowdite was throwing everything they had at us. Fletcher, J-Rod, and Shea were all very patient with the disc and methodically worked through us anytime we were in a zone, and the combination of quick players like Plant, Ben B, and Tessa made man equally challenging. We were down 10-6 but then saw a glimmer of hope in one of the rarest moments you’ll see in league: Evan cutting deep. Despite being old, fat, and slow he managed a second rarity: actually laying out, catching it, and then not turning it over. When asked for a quote a few days later he said, “It was a great 5 seconds that I regretted for a good 3 days…”. This did spark us to score 2 more points bringing us to a respectable 10-8, but unwilling to yield to the pressure, Athrowdite wrapped up the game in style and took a solid win to finish the day
