Hello everyone! Welcome to the second ever edition of the Infinity Times! The galaxy’s premier source of news for Gainesville Ultimate! With backing from Lord Thanos himself! (Well, just the Department of Primitive World Development within Lord Thanos’ government, but that’s basically the same thing. You would not believe what I had to do to get this grant…) Aaaaanyway, Team Thanos rolled up ready to rumble and play some Frisbee. With no rumbling in the sky or breeze in the air, it was a perfect day.
Our first game was against Team Yzma, purveyors and pushers of potions of animal-transformation. As our first time coming head to head, we were excited to see how well their animal instincts shaped up against our galactic might.
As it turns out, rather well. We started off on serve, trading points up to 3-3. But then…disaster. We started shriveling like snails in a salt shower. They just…scored a lot. And we didn’t. They broke their way to half. We attempted a minor comeback, but just weren’t up to snuff. Final score ended up being 11-6 🙁
Despite this loss and the fact that Lord Thanos will be disappointed (if he ever finds out tee-hee), we still had some exceptional offensive plays in this game. Foremost among them was Danielle snatching a quick pass from Tommy underneath the D attempt of Liz, whose wingspan might be compared to an albatross. In addition, Plant and Switzer had an incredible play for our last point, with a Switzer-hammer sliding right through Zach and Michelle to land in the waiting arms of Plant.
On the defensive side, Donovan continues his streak of D’s with a hand block and Thomas Dolce joins the ranks of the Thanos D award with a D of his own. As you might imagine, a team that scored twice as many points as you did doesn’t generate a ton of defensive opportunities. But Team Thanos will stay hungry for obtaining all possible D-Stones.
For our second game, we finally got the meet the scurviest dogs of the high seas, the Skying Dutchmen. Fatherless no more (with both their dads returned from missing at sea), we got to face the full crew on the high seas.
After getting warmed up by Yzma, we were ready for round two. Unfortunately we began by getting broken twice. Who were the heroes who brought us out back and made Lord Thanos proud? Lyle and Donovan. Between the two of them, they assisted our first three points (with style I might add) and Donovan getting a hand block on Ricardo really allowed us to start digging out of the break hole we had found ourselves in.
These breaks inspired us with the might of the Power Stone and team Thanos began a breaking spree. After tying the game at 5-5, we took half, and continued to break, eventually going up 8-5.
Alas, it was not to be. The Dutchmen rallied, almost turning back Time to send us back to the start of the game, and went on a 5 point scoring streak (all breaks…cry) which left us high and dry losing 11-8. A double whammy for the favored team of the true galactic emperor.
In all, our offense looked much better the second game. Reagan, Plant and Tommy were all creating good space in the middle for continuation, and even the handlers were getting involved in the midfield to get a few steps before firing off some shots deep (well done Switzer and Tom Brown!). Tommy had a spectacular sky over Steven in the midfield, followed by a big throw to Plant for a score. Probably my favorite play of the game. Ben “Mechanical Man” Chapin with his new cybernetic arm made his big offensive comeback as well with two assists. Our defense improved as well, with three D’s across the game for our team.
That’s all for this issue of the Infinity Times! At least this is the version you all will see. Time to go write the version I send to Lord Thanos. He can’t know that the team that bears his name has ever lost. Journalistic integrity goes out the door when you’re dealing with a cosmic entity that can literally rewrite reality. Anyway, if we end up in a reality where Team Thanos is just a bunch of grasshoppers in a field…well I guess none of us will know that it happened, it’ll just be how it was meant to be.
