Kelly Green falls to Navy to start the season

Final Score: 8 – 11 Navy over Kelly Green

Kelly circled up before the game to go over names and talk about where people like to play. We quickly realized that our team has a lot of good throwers but were severely lacking in the play-making-athlete department. So we recognized defense will be a struggle for us throughout the season. Our game plan to start was to start on offense and score on every possession…

Kelly won both the flip for color and the flip for possession. We selected to play wearing white and to start on offense. So before we started play things were great!

Once the game started things turned south quickly. We turned the disc a few throws in from a freak drop by the usually steady handed Brandon Bowlin. The overly athletic and young Navy team scored off our turn quickly. After this turn we were able to keep serve for a few points taking the game to 3-4. At which point Navy took an impressive lead not letting us score again that half. Our turns were due to a combination of poor throws and poachy coverage by Navy. We were unable to find ourselves defensively at all during this half.

At half we took a second and talked through how we were playing and how to capitalize on our biggest strength, our 4 great ladies. We also decided man coverage was not going to work at all and switched to a traditional zone and to try and trap flick.

On the first point out of half Matya got a decisive D and we scored off of it! Navy followed with a nice deep shot from Steven to Hayden (I think). We would continue to out score Navy 5-3 in the second half before weather ended the game. Kelly Green really felt like our zone and working the disc through our ladies was a game changer and that we could come back to win.

This game could have ended differently but we will never know since games were called due to weather.

Kelly MVP is league newcomer and UF club rookie Ashley Collins. She was very active on the field and very reliable to get open. She had 2 scores and an assist with no turns!

Navy MVP is Bhagya Patel. This guy was such a pain to play against with multiple poachy Ds and consistently getting open. He’s stupid sneaky fast.
