Fantastic Fourhands
We came into this week missing Luke and Lyle from the guys and Dre and Jacquelyn from the girls while the fantastic Fourhands were missing Captain Alek, Danny Gallagher and Kate and Dustin. We came out on offense with the wind (sick work on the flip, Matt!) and scored. Then we added two breaks. Dustin and Kate finally arrived at this point, towing their children, and set up surprisingly fast, but not fast enough to get on for the next point that put us up 4 – 0. Fantastic Fourhands regrouped and worked the disc up the field for a break from Dustin to Tommy who broke to Andrew Reynolds for their first score. There was a pretty good wind this game that came and went and made big throws/hucks (and even some short throws) inconsistent, creating a lot of turns and forcing teams to work the disc up with a lot of throws. The next point was the low point for both teams, and we turned the disc 5 times… But, lucky for us, Fourhands turned it 6 times and we scored. We seemed to dial in after that and played pretty consistent frisbee the rest of the game. Unfortunately for the Fourhands, they never really got in a rhythm and had a lot of trouble getting the disc up the field with drops and throwaways. We scored the next point to go to half, then started the second half with another break before the Fourhands scored again on a nice huck from Caroline to Kate in the back of the endzone. Tommy would sneak in one more score to Aiden but we finished out the game 11 to 3.
Horror Flicks
Joe and Billy had a depleted squad this game with only 8 total, although they told me this was pretty good numbers for them this season. We started with the disc going into the wind and the Horror Flicks ran a zone… and we turned it and they scored. We traded back and forth with lots of breaks on both sides but we ended up making it into the half as if we had just held serve, 6-5. At this point, I think the low numbers for Horror Flicks started to affect their legs and we came out with a break out of half. Horror Flicks held the next point to come back to 7-6. This point was where, I think, the game might have gone either way. We turned the disc going downwind and horror flicks worked it back all the way to our endzone and were on the edge of scoring when we got the D. I saw Jacob take off and picked up the disc and put up a “this will probably work” huck that he read and attacked successfully. Jacob followed my lead and put up a floaty 30 yard huck to Tom Brown who was tightly covered. The disc was settling right on the line of out of bounds with Tom’s defender in position and I was getting ready to get back on defense when Tom jumped up and snagged the disc and toed in the score. Gotta let players make plays. We rolled from there and ended up winning 11 – 7. Shoutout to Horror Flicks for a great competitive game with good spirit despite the low numbers. Ellie made a lot of plays and successfully attacked a bunch of bad/floaty passes from both sides that I thought might go either way. Kay was solid in the handler space. Joe of course floated up some flicks that Plant and Billy came down with, and Howard is looking more confident and getting more open unders every time I play him.
Overall, I thought we spread the disc really well. We had a few times where offense would get stagnant (against zone and person coverage) but handlers did a good job of just resetting until we found an opening. Shoutouts to both Matt (neck) and TK (ankle) for taking injuries but making it back on the field within a few points. Reagan was really active around the endzone punching in assists and scores and she and Lucia did an impressive job with some tough defensive matchups. We take on the Scoober Snacks and Best Friends this next week so I’m going to stop writing now and work on rehabbing my ankle so I can try to chase Nathan around.
