Today’s headline: Kate and Dustin prove why getting two first round draft picks for the price of one is absolutely busted.
Starting our match against David S. Huckins, we had to play down 6 on 7 for the first three points. While there were a few spots of brilliance (Tommy, Jake, and Summer’s cup), it was hard to not fall to an 0-3 deficit. Then, in a tale as old as time, the arrival of the Travaglini clan lead to a spark of hope. With out numbers revitalized, we went on a tear. Dustin found 4 assists, one of which snuck by three defenders to hit myself standing still in the corner of the endzone. Kate put on a clinic, recording 3 points and an assist herself. Tom Culpepper and Tommy Akin used to combined powers of Tom to find lots of upfield movement, giving vital resets and dumps to Dustin and Kate, as well as Tom finding an assist, and Tommy finding 2 scores and an assist. Despite the low numbers, everyone played really well and stayed healthy (except me who cramped after a particularly long point). As far as DSH goes, there was s0me seriously good D from Bhagya in the deep space, as well as some good hucks from Jeff. Mills and Andre also seemed to be in the right place at the right time, preventing some hucks from going off that would’ve probably resulted in a score. Jemima was also sneaky good, especially at breaking our zone in the earlier points. Unfortunately, a 7-9 loss was the final result, but when fielding a full team, I have no doubt that the Fourhands can hang with the best of them.
Our second game against Best Friends really doubled down on relying on our stars. We played 5vs5, which while fun, was extremely tiring. Turns out having 3 cutters means you have to do nearly twice as much cutting. However, we still played pretty well, starting off 4-1 after a first point that lasted over twenty minutes thanks to an abundance of turns. The Best Friends went on a run, finding a 5-4 lead suddenly. However, this lit a fire under Kate and Dustin. With me attending to Landon on the sidelines, they were free to exploit the Best Friends low numbers and bring the game home. Final score, 7-5, with Kate having 4 scores and an assist to me, and Dustin finding 3 additional assists. Shoutout to Summer, who played virtually every point this weekend and still managed to find the drive in her to grab a pair of Ds in this grindy game. In fact, shoutout to everyone on both teams for playing through this game. While playing 5v5 isn’t necessarily traditional ultimate, both teams played hard and kept good spirit the whole game. Nathan and Chris were nigh unguardable (except by Kate), and Omie was constantly a threat with her impressive throws. All in all, this was a great game for everyone involved. Hopefully we can get a true rematch against Best Friends at some point because they may be the most fun team in the league.
With that, I must bid you adieu, sadly as men’s college team travels to UCF for a tournament. This weekend looks to be full of spooky surprises, as another 8 person lineup will have to steel themselves for a frightening Frisboos lineup and a Weenie Huck Jr’s looking to prove themselves as a true top tier team.
