Captains’ Reports Week 1

Fresca, Orange
Orange vs Purple
Outcome: Orange win, 15-9

After what looked like a rainy league day, the weather cleared up (read: got hot AF) and we started the game on defense. This was a close game for the entire first half. Orange took half 8-5. After half, purple went on a bit of a run and had us at 9-8 before Orange started to figure out our zone offense. Both teams did very well under the pressure of zone defense and there were all kinds of interesting throws coming out of both teams all game.

Some Purple shoutouts:

• Ben Hayden, Jared Futral, and Liam Rawson were very consistent handlers for their team, and all three took their turns downfield on the receiving end of some nice throws from purple team
• JP Organ was making our defense work, especially in our zone, when he was always in the perfect spot for those hammers coming from Purple’s handlers (annoying, but well played)
• Bari and Lauren Wickman were consistently open downfield for the deep looks all game!

Orange Shoutouts:

• League newcomer Munir proved himself to be a worthy thrower on Orange team, throwing two assists this game (and catching an additional 3!)
• Kash lit up the stats sheet with 4 assists, a score, and FOUR D’s this game
• Ben Hackett racked up three scores and played tight defense all game
• Christine made her way back as a handler and was cool, calm, and collected under zone defense pressure (and also pulled upwind like a boss)

Orange team MVP: Jonathan Kash for his pristine throws in the wind and singlehandedly racking up almost half of our D’s for the day!

Jenny, Baby Blue

On Sunday September the 15th of the year 2019 Skyblue aka Car RoseRod aka your boy blue aka a cooler name we haven’t thought of yet played White. Points were played. 19 points to be specific. White got some and then got some more. Sky blue got one then 6 and then some more. When the points were done being played white had 10 and sky blue had 9. White was happy sky blue was sad but good spirit was had. The End.

Tori, Navy

Captain’s report:

On a very windy Sunday afternoon, Navy began our first game of the season in a game that at first appeared as if it would win the award for Most Calls in a League Game… Ever. As any classic first game of the season would go, with both teams struggling to get organized right off the bat, we had approximately 69 calls within the first 3 points of play. Then, slowly but surely, everyone shook off their first game jitters, we smoothed out the calls, and the game was underway!

The first few points consisted of each team trading points, with lots of turnovers due to wind on both sides. Six points in, the score remained even at 3-3. It seemed as if this might be how the game was going to continue, until Navy found our rhythm! Around the 8th or 9thpoint, we started to seize our opportunities on defense and managed to score 3 breaks in a row to take half at 8-5. After some well-deserved pup hangout time, Navy returned to the field on offense. Determined to keep our run going, Navy worked it down the field easily to make it 9-5. The wind made for some interesting throws throughout the game, but before we knew it, Navy managed to take the game at 15-7. Since we were determined not to keep an accurate record, our play-by-play may be slightly lacking for this game. However, we managed to compile a hodgepodge of stats and highlights for your pleasure (see below)!

– Alethia was our all-star of the game, catching two upwind scores to secure us two of our breaks this game.

– The Adams, as they will here forth be known, had some BIG skies on the other team to secure some scores throughout the game.

– Sydney made an excellent deep cut to receive a full field huck from Adam Carr, then dished to Tom for the score.

– Walker had some excellent sliding saves to keep us from turnovers

– Alex Gonzalez kept the disc going downfield with consistent throws and big saves to keep the disc up

– All of our new players had lots of touches and did a great job of moving the disc!

– The ladies scored 1/3 of our overall points and over 80% of our players had stats (assists/scores/Ds) for this game!

Brandon, Charcoal

Week 1 Final Score: Charcoal 15 over True Blue 6

Our team started the day on offense, but True Blue came out hot! After a missed opportunity at the endzone, we turned the disc over and Blue quickly converted a break point only to do the same thing the next point. All of a sudden Blue was up 2-0, and I was seriously wondering if this was about to be like my last two years of league. True Blue came down with man defense to start, and Fletcher was guarding me which left me feeling pretty hopeless.

At this point Josh Barker finally showed up and team Charcoal (or at least I) finally found my muse! Next thing I knew we scored, then broke, broke, broke, and broke again! It was 5-2 before blue scored again, and we finally ended the first half up 8-3.

The second game up, and Ryan Goetz said, “as long as we score 7 before they score 12 we are good,” and so we had our game plan at hand. The wind started to pick up, and we decided to throw in a zone and it proved to be successful! Huysein had two run through Ds, our newest lady Michaela sealed in bookends, and Jim Davis did the same! We eventually ended the game 15-6.

Overall I was very pleased with our team. We may have been missing Lisa Morris, and Sydney Switzer is still recovering from her ACL injury, but Jill, Tanya, and Michaela have proven themselves to be stellar stars. In fact, Michaela may just be the steal of the draft! She may be new to competitive ultimate, but Michaela is so intuitive in spacing and movement and dishes the disc back perfectly.

Shout out to True Blue, the Best Blue, on hustling throughout the game. They were without some of their top players – Schimmel and Queen come to mind – but they never gave up. Our zone proved to be aggressive and tough to beat, but Blue’s Cece and Puff wouldn’t go down without a fight! Fletcher, keep playin that popper position – you’re unstoppable there!

Chris Falk, White

White 10 over Sky Blue 9

The schedule was not kind to us as our first game was against DDP. After the customary going through names we realized that everyone was experienced so we skipped over the intro to mark, force etc… and were ready to roll. We were very fortunate to start the game. Sky Blue had some unforced errors and we jumped out to a 6-1 lead. I believe Ruddy had 3 of those scores, two of which were on just sick throws by league newcomer Michael Arbutine. We kept to the spirit of league with some open lines and simultaneously Sky Blue stopped making mistakes and we started making some poor decisions and Sky Blue actually took half 8-7. We weren’t feeling great after giving up such a big lead but on the bright side we were on serve at half. Coming out of half there was less than 15 minutes until hard cap. Game tied at 9-9 and we pulled on universe. Turnovers back and forth and finally on our third try to break and win the game we converted to win 10-9. Great competitive game to start the season and other than a few did he / she catch It or did It hit the ground there weren’t many calls at all. Total shout out to Caroline and Alex, our only 2 ladies, who both had to play savage the entire game. Finally, on the list of things that sucked early in the first half my cleat broke so I only got to play a few points yesterday. Boo.
