After a devastating week 1 universe point loss, the BumbleDeez were hungry for their first win of the season, and oh boy, they came out playing with an untamed fire that I’ve never seen before.
We start the game on a subpar note. First point of the game we threw a silly turn and they broke us upwind. After that, we turned the game around getting upwind break after break. The Dump Beetles unfortunately only had 2 female matching players to our 5 females matching players, so they had to play down a lady when we were in the Gen Zone. The BumbleDeez were clicking on all cylinders, setting up a perfect zone and capitalizing on mistakes. And the big difference…we stopped throwing hammers at the ground! After all was said and done, the BumbleDeez ended up winning the game 15-7.
The BumbleDeez really lived up to their name, getting a total of 21 D’s on the day (big shoutout to the wind advisory for helping us with this) with 11 players getting at least 1 D. There was some big highlights from a lot of players as well. Trevor continued his reign of terror, skying anyone and everyone that gets in his way, including jumping over his own teammates to get the D. Lucia was absolutely carving up their zone, finding the right space in the middle on every single throw. Larissa and Adam both did great against the zone as well, both scoring 2 goals on the day. Taylor had her first D of the season, absolutely annihilating the disc to the ground. And as much as I’d love to bully Joe for having 10 turnovers (potentially more), he had a dime for every turnover on the day, totaling a crazy 8 assists on the day. And best of all, a completed hammer in the wind!
But without a doubt, our MVP of the day was Liz. Liz is a fairly new player, but her ability to pick up and learn new skills is amazing. With the 20 mph of wind, she was able to learn to use her height and play up in the zone and was able to play very well and find space against their zone. Liz ended the day with 3 scores, an assist, and a D. But the stats truly don’t tell the story for how confident she looked playing against a zone. The Dump Beetles’ MVP was Jeff, who had multiple gorgeous upwind throws for scores. Whenever they needed a big play, Jeff was there to throw a miraculous throw.
The BumbleDeez are definitely starting to gain some momentum and learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Despite the weather, it was an extremely fun game and we can’t wait to play the Dump Beetles again, hopefully with both our rosters at full strength.
