A Royally Gold Gilding

Well, we decided to take last week’s game and reverse it. Gold had a nearly full squad against our most dedicated 11. I wasn’t feeling well so the pup and I strayed in a few points late to catch the game from a distance. I missed the first 3 points but tried to get a solid play by play for the remainder of the game. Both teams have experienced players and great throwers and both went with zone defenses. This was a game of solid smart throws up the middle from both teams followed by some really unfortunate turns mostly in the endzones (unfortunately a few more from Royal then Gold).

When I arrived, Gold was up 0-3. I missed our first goal settling in and then watched Royal pull to Gold. Both teams had a few turns thanks to the wind. Then Adub sees Cody poaching and thinks he’s got the throw. Cody runs down the throw and comes down with the d deep in the end zone. Royal worked it up the field for a score from Anton to Dan bringing it up to 2-3. Royal pulls to Gold again and quickly gets a turn. Royal tries to make a throw across the middle where Nate sprints for a beautiful layout d. Gold capitalizes and scores 2-4. Here is where friends began to chat and Tucker became very distracting in his adorable but overly excited way and somehow it’s halftime and the score is 2-8.

Royal pulls to Gold first point out of half and Gold works it up the field for a nice easy walking point 2-9. Gold sends the disc to Royal and its Coleys turn for a layout d. Gold also turns the discs and Anton sends it to Dan again for royals first point out of half 3-9. Gold receives the disc working it up the middle waiting for that opportune huck, as they do, when Adub finally finds it and sends a hammer across the field to Asa for the score 3-10. Royal takes their turn to receive and work up the middle, as they also do, and Sam sends the ball to Cody bringing us to 4-10. This next point has several turns with Cody getting the first d in our end zone. Royal also turns the disc in the end zone, Gold looks like they’re going to turn again but Nate has an incredible layout catch. Sara sends the disc to Monica in the end zone but it goes just over for a yet again endzone turn. Royal gives up one more turn for Nate to take this point 4-11. Royal receives, works the disc all the way down and Mike brings down the turn in the, yes you guessed it, end zone. Mike takes one look and hucks it deep for Adub. Adub makes a layout catch for a full field score 4-12. Nate (okay who is this guy?) takes our next point 4-13. Royal gets 5-13 from a hammer from Pete to Sam followed by a blady flick from Sam to Cody. Royal, determined to play hard through the whole game despite the lack of subs, gets a break and takes the next point 6-13 from Emily to Dan. 6-14 has a Mike to Nate combo. Sam and Cody connect once more for the 7-14 point and Nate (okay but really where did he come from) takes home the game winning point 7-15.

Royal MVP. I have to give this week to Cody. This man is fast, works hard, jumps harder and knows where he needs to be. Not only did Cody lead us in Ds and bring us home with the last several points but he knows how to motivate a team. I don’t think we would have played as hard as we did without him. Honestly though everyone at this game deserves mvp. These surprisingly thick 11 people played hard and smart to the very last point. I love this team!!!

Royal Shoutouts:

  • Anton for always being an upfield look and getting 3 assists
  • Sticky hands Dan for getting 3 of our 7 points
  • ET for playing basically every point getting big on defense and making the throws that count.
  • Pete was a playmaker this game, showing Royal his true handler abilities

Gold MVP: to the name I typed the most. Nate Astrom. Nate worked hard and made it look fun. Several layout ds and catches. 4 scores (I think) and always always open in the middle for his handlers.
