Week 5: Purple vs. White

Week 5 was a hot one as the Gainesville Grapes went head to head with the White team. I don’t know their name, if they have one, but they were counting in French for all their cheers so maybe that has something to do with it. White came out pretty strong and, despite having very few subs, maintained their energy throughout the game. They stayed ahead the entire first half, but there wasn’t a huge point difference as purple continually fought to catch up. Half-time was taken by White 5-8 and after some painfully long points in the second half, the game finished at 10-15. There was good spirit the entire game with very few calls, and the calls that were made were dealt with quickly and calmly.

White has some pretty solid players and they know how to utilize their women, which makes them a dangerous team. Sydney scored several goals and handled the disc a lot, getting multiple unders to keep it moving with Alexa often cutting for her to gain yards. Andrew Pla tore up the field and scored a few goals (some of them were layouts that looked pretty painful, kudos). And then there’s Dom, a newer player to the league who also scored several points and is a ton of fun to play with. This guy has great field awareness and great energy on and off the field. Excited to see the crazy D’s he’ll be getting at the end of the season.

In the first half, Jonathan had a great layout catch to save possession for purple and keep the momentum going. Cody is still really fast, and can always be counted on to cut deep. He’s also gotten very good at reading the disc and manages to come away with the score even when his defender is close. Ryan is coming off an injury with style and dominating defense in the deep space. I would think twice about hucking it when he’s down there.

As much as we hate to lose to Josh, it was a fun game and both teams played hard in the heat. Cheers!
