Game 2: Surprisingly Thicker vs. RED
Score 15-9 – RED
RED (acronym yet to be determined) came to play this week. On a day filled with surprising wind, a lot of zone was thrown on both sides, with RED’s zone offense coming out on top.
RED’s cutting core and short, quick throws were a challenge to defend against. Jared brought excellent handling flexibility to the table, working heavily with Schimmel, Nan, and Luke behind the disc. Jill and KJ did an excellent job disrupting the cup, as well as using their length on the defensive side of the disc. Matt used his speed and… leftiness(?) to open space as well. Overall the team focused on short throws into the cup, never holding the disc for more than 3 or 4 stall counts and resetting very effectively. This quick style forced adjustments, which allowed longer-distance cuts from Jess and the Andrews to open up. Schimmel had an excellent catch off of a would-be block, which he quickly turned into a score. Plus someone must have told Jared to not throw hammers, because he was raining them down extremely effectively towards the latter half.
On the thicker side, Aaron did all he could to pull the team through with 4 assists, 2 scores, and 4 D’s. Ben showed impressive speed and reaction time with some excellent cutting and an ever-improving role in the 5-spot of the zone. Several adjustments yielded positive results, namely switching to man defense with a focus on cutting in cuts and moving 1 handler, usually Evan or Aaron, into a popping role on offense. There was consistent flow behind the disc from Oster, Trieu, and Clea, with only a few turns happening early in points. A few minor errors from drops to slower throws in the wind caused most turns, which were readily capitalized on by RED.
Overall, great game with high spirit, competition, and fun!
