LEAGUE IS BACK BABY! Boy oh boy, I never thought I’d be so happy to be back out on such crappy fields after a thunderstorm. Seeing everyone warming up, throwing, chatting, and everything in between just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Anyway, on to the game.
So I knew before the game even started that we’d be starting league of with a bang, that bang being that we had one lady. As luck would have it, we would be playing down 50% of the time against a team that seemed to be fully staffed and had instant chemistry, but try as they might, the ultimate gods would not put a damper on the return of league! We started on D and between a mix of my team being very new and Royal being very not new, they quickly scored. We then received and got broken almost immediately. This would be the trend for the next 4 points until we finally managed to get a goal in to and get on the board, making the game a very close 1-6. We managed to get one more point in before half to make it 2-8. During halftime Pink discussed proper defense and how to run a vert stack. As we were about to take the field, the oh so gracious captains of Royal agreed to allow us to play an extra man when we would otherwise be playing down (you guys are da bomb!). We came out on O and naturally after discussing vert Royal came down with a zone (you guys are slightly less da bomb). Royal, in true Hume pick up fashion, ran the zone quite well and broke us. At this point we started to get the gears turning and managed to score with a great hammer from Tyler to Anabel. Even better, we went on to break Royal not once, but twice! From here we mostly traded points until we were broken on the final point to end the game 8-15. The score may not reflect it but we managed to score 3x as many points in the second half as the first, and it was mostly due to our defense improving. Haters will say it’s because we had a guy covering a girl but that didn’t stop said girl from crushing the game.
Overall the game was fun and spirited with both sides having a good time. We may have lost this time but we will only get better from here and I for one am quite excited about what the future holds for the Pink squad. Thanks for making the homecoming back to league a fun one Royal!
Royal MVP: Jared “I hammer when I want” Futral
This guy. Hasn’t anyone ever told him that when the force is backhand you probably shouldn’t throw hammers? Apparently not. Jared was dropping dimes all game and was truly repping his title as First Rounder. Nice playing Jared!
Pink MVP: Anabel “Please God can I have a sub next week” Legaspi
I had never met Anabel before Wednesday so it was great to see she was all smiles when I finally did. Even more impressive was how she retained that smile after I told her she would be playing savage for her league debut. Even more impressiver was how she played every. single. point without complaint all the while still managing to have an impact, whether it be on D or catching scores on O. Thank you Anabel for being the hero we needed and didn’t deserve!
P.S. Please come back out next week! I’ll bring a wig just in case.
