Captains Report 6/30

What a game. In the first close game for gold this season we had our fair share of injuries and deficits but we were able to rally and pull out a win against a very talented Cardinal team.
Gold was a little slow showing up to the field and Natalie and I were concerned we might be playing with only 1 sub each for women and men. On top of that Mikey was feeling somewhat under the weather and wanted to rest for the game. Luckily we had almost everyone show up, but our handling core was late.
This game did not start out great. We started on offense and our captain Shea threw a terrible up line huck that was D’d by Cardinal’s Will. They quickly scored on this turn as well as the next one.
Luckily after the first two points our handler core of Adub, Phil, and Darnell had warmed up and were ready to play and we were able to score two and bring the game to 2-2. After this our teams traded points with a combination of poor communication causing turns as well as rushing plays and forcing throws. But both teams played pretty good defense with Gold switching between man and zone. Adub had a great D on one of Sam’s hucks but unfortunately was injured doing so. Dave also was injured during the latter part of the first half.
Cardinal took half 8-7 but Gold was not going to give up this game.
At half with Dave and Adub both out for the game Mikey threw his cleats on and a Gold jersey. Darnell and Dave both talked with some of our younger players about slowing our game down, making smart throws, looking for continuations, etc. and this made a big difference in our play in the second half.
Coming out of half we scored and then traded points with Cardinal until the score was tied up at 10-10. At this point we were able to go up 12-10 off a couple sick catches by Natalie thrown by Mikey. We traded points again until the score was 14-12. At this point we were very close to time cap, and Gold was feeling good.
On the last point Cardinal worked the disc well with lots of swings. Gold was able to get a turn off a foot block from Shea. Josh Layton will tell you it was dirty, but the players on the field all called it clean. With a few nice up line passes we were able to work it halfway down the field at which point Mikey saw a deep cut from Natalie and put it up and out into space in the back corner. Of course Natalie caught it and sealed the game.
Overall this game saw the most competitive play and best disc movement Gold has had yet. Cardinal was a great team and we would not want to play them when they are at full strength. Cardinal MVP goes to Sam who keeps the disc moving constantly for Cardinal and was a major pain for us to cover all game. Gold MVP is my wonderful co-captain Natalie who led the team in scores this game and kept morale high in the face of injuries and point deficits.
Let it be known i got 0 D’s on sams throws… although there were plenty of D’s to be had… I only D’d two of Wills hucks… lord knows sam would never allow himself to be D’d by Adub
