Kelly won 15 – 8 over Red.
This game was about as fun as a game could be for playing savage for the first half. Kelly Green was looking very shallow with only 4 players at the field by the official start time. Fresca and Joe were kind enough to agree to a 2:30 start time while Kelly awaited the arrival of Ben and Bonnie, two of the most dedicated league players I have met, who were flying back from Texas just in time for the game. Fresca and Joe were also kind enough to play 6 v 6 in the spirit of fair play and better competition.
After Ben and Bonnie arrived we started on offense and quickly scored. Given that we only had 6 players to start, we had a strong group of players for offensive. Between great primary handles in Zak and Lyle and the sticky hands and great cuts of Bonnie, Ben and Alex we moved the disc very efficiently against the young and mostly inexperienced squad that Red had. We were somewhat concerned about how we would manage defensively given that we were expecting to play savage all day. So we threw a 1 – 3 – 2 zone that worked very well for the first few points. We were able to force risky throws and generate turnovers.
After we managed to get a comfortable 5 – 1 lead using our zone we called a time out for water, during which Matya arrived. Matya is one of the best ladies in league and was a great relief to our six savage players. Fresca and Joe agreed that we could continue to play 6 v 6 giving us one sub each point which made all the difference in our stamina.
We also decided to switch to man at this point since we felt we matched up pretty well against Red. We were also able to get lots of Ds due to some sloppy throws from the inexperienced Red squad. I will say that all of the new players on Red have the basis of the game down solid and many of them could be league staples after another season or two, they just need some more time around a disc.
This game would continue to be fairly lopsided to half and through the second half of the game as well. Huge shoutout to Joe and Fresca for having a great spirited team that made this a really fun game when it could have really sucked for Kelly if we were playing down and without a sub all day.
