On a blustery Sunday Afternoon, the Very Huckery Caterpillars were taking on the Murder Hornets in their first catch 15 clash of the season. However, one thing that the caterpillars noticed on the Murderous Roster was that the Hornets’ good luck charm was missing. So we ask the question, where was Jim Davis? He is the reason why the Murder Hornets are favorites to win league this season after all. Did the Hornets underestimate the Caterpillars and decide to rest him for future games, or did one of the Caterpillars have a vendetta out for the Frisbee Psychic for pitting them for a last place finish? Was he injured? Did the Reptilian Race find out about his talents and abduct him for them to take further control of the earth? Did he get lost at Denver Airport? One thing we did know, Jim had disappeared and presumed to have skipped town. There had never been a search for him and when asked of his whereabouts, no one knew, so I was forced to assume the more than likely story that he’d gone to Vegas to watch the Super Bowl. But, that was a lie. After three hours, I found him *IN TOWN* wandering around Dr. Anton’s (also missing from the Hornets roster today) house stuffing his face with wings and ribs. Jim Davis is okay folks. Although, his absence gave the Very Huckery Caterpillars a lifeline to play some awesome Ultimate on this very windy day.
After being placed last in “League predictions” and being snubbed each week in the “pick ems” – most notably by our very own Steven Nguy, we have a chip on our shoulders, not to mention a Chip on our team. We started out on O downwind, and the first point had the only questionable call of the day, I fumble the disc just shy of the endzone… I felt the disc fall on my leg before I regain control, Leung said up, Bowling said down – the disc goes back. We manage to score and go up 1-0. The game goes back forth for a few points, with both teams having the wind advantage on O and both teams coming out on D with hard zone before we finally break them. The swings and patience of our handlers – TK, Stephen, Brad, and Chris “Coach” Oster showed high game IQ in the wind, with a special shout out to TK for taking time to coach Pranav how to move in the handler space live on the field, who then threw an unexpected but incredible cross field flick straight into Andrew’s arms. Shea Butter was defensive player of the day with some monster Deez from the five position, and Jake Murley coming out of nowhere in an upwind point where the wind blew the disc over the heads of multiple players giving Jake the “down on his knees” score at the very back of the end zone for catch of the day! Jenny is consistently phenomenal in both cutting and handling, and Nathan showed he is not just a target for full field “punts”, by playing middle of the field and bringing the disc up. Bonnie and Emory were making some well-timed cuts and burned our ladies deep to the end zone for high scoring potential with comments from the sideline – “Jess, you’re just not that tall” after my failed attempt at guarding Bonnie who knows how to read a disc much better than I. Ben, Brandon, and Tommy controlled the handler space and played very smart for the Hornets with Ben claiming that he only threw “5 hucks” today, down from his usual huck every point. A beautiful half field O-I from Coach to Steven, was only one of our many great scores that we got today with 9/13 of our attending players making it on the scoreboard, truly showing our depth as a team. In the last point of the game, Alison sprints *scratch that* flies down field on D, intercepts a swing to Ben before the rest of the field knew what had even happened, the rest of the Caterpillars realize and catch up and launch the disc to her, giving this gal the bookends that these caterpillars refuse to munch through!
Final Score: The Very Huckery Caterpillars 15 – 9 The Murder Hornets.
All in all, I love playing with this team, the energy, the spirit, and the cohesion that we’re building each week is truly a sight to see. See y’all next week!!
