Sky Blue versus Purple – Sky Blue gets its first win 15-7
Windy days can present challenges and opportunities, and our game was a profound illustration of this point. Purple is a damn solid team, but they were missing many key players and even the sure hands of Yanuck and Colverson could not help them get things going. on offense. It didn’t help that, on the flip side, Sky Blue really hit its stride this week. Our zone looked really good, and we made it incredibly difficult for Purple to move this disc, which is why we came out on top in this one. It was a tough day, Purple, but you demonstrated incredible Spirit during what I’m sure was a frustrating game, so 11/10 on the Spirit Scale for you, and I know you’ll bounce back and give folks a run for their money come playoffs.
Skyblue was missing a few players but we had our top 4 picks out there, and everyone on the team contributed profoundly to this win. As Captains, I know Jenny and I were super psyched to see our team start playing up to its potential. Big shout out to Matt Baldwin for the strides he’s making this season. He delivered a SICK assist early on in the game, and he’s becoming a powerful force on defense his well. As he’s getting more comfortable with game mechanics and flow, his size and athleticism are a welcome addition to the squad of Sky Blue.
It’s safe to say that with and undefeated Charcoal leading the pack, this season isn’t turning out as anyone predicted, and I know with the solid squad and incremental improvement Sky Blue is seeing we’re going to be surprising some of those early predictions as well. This is gonna be a VERY interesting playoff season!
Orange vs Charcoal
Outcome: Charcoal over Orange, 15-10
Another windy day saw your orange Crush struggling mightily. Were we struggling with the wind? Alas, no. We were struggling with ourselves. Ultimate-ly (hehe) we were the instruments of our own downfall this week. Another bad case of the dropsies (it’s a plague, y’all) and we dug ourselves another big ole hole. The first few points of the game went to Charcoal and things were not looking good for us. We battled back to tie it at 2s, but the game quickly got away from us and Charcoal took half up by 5. We struggled mightily after half and managed to narrow the gap to 9-11 before charcoal went on another run. We ended the game 10-15.
Charcoal Shoutouts:
- Charcoal ladies are bosses. Straight up. Jill is an experienced player who always finds the open spots and tears up the unders before making a crisp throw that always finds its way through any gap we leave. Lisa is a champ, as always, and is always ready to take advantage of any opening we give her. Michaela, Sydney, and Tanya were open all over the place. We simply did not have the depth in ladies this week to be able to keep up with them all game.
- Tommy Akin is always a player that you hate to have to play against. The dude is fast and smart with where he goes and what he throws. The type of experience and field intelligence that makes for a deadly opponent.
- Brandon and Steven made for frustratingly calm handlers who took their time and waited for things to open up in our zone. We’d get them higher in the stall count before they would take a shot that seemed to come out of nowhere. Chilly handlers are not an easy find around here.
Orange Shoutouts:
- Joe found a new level of calm as a handler for us, making great decisions and holstering throws that he normally would take. The decision making improvements are HUGE and the results were awesome to see. This guy is turning into a solid handler and all around great player.
- Christine was amazing as a popper in zone; finding open spaces and calmly throwing the continues to keep the disc moving up the field.
- Ness made her way back as a handler and was one of the biggest contributors to the game this week with 2 assists, 2 scores and a D. She also helped out with handling when things got rough and got us out of some sticky situations.
Week 4 MVP – Parks Weatherford
Parks is a try-hard (in the best way possible) and I’ve never seen him give up on the disc. He throws his body every direction on defense and puts insane pressure on the other team to make their throws perfect. Any window of opportunity, Parks is there laying it all on the line. Mad respect for the non-stop effort. Not to mention, racking up 4 assists out of the 10 in this game. Not too shabby.
