Week 2: Marsh Mermaids
Game 3: Marsh Mermaids vs. Jukebox Heroes (Joe and Luke’s team)
Final Score: 10-8
Enter week 2 of Fall League 2022 and the Marsh Mermaids face the formidable Jukebox Heroes in the first game of the day. The Jukebox Heroes are all present an astounding 15 MINUTES EARLY and look quite impressive during warm-ups. The (7) Mermaids know that the Heroes have great team speed, several seasoned handlers, including Joe, Evan, Chris, and Will, AND ALL OF THEIR FEMALE-MATCHING PLAYERS PRESENT, and will be a force to contend with. The Mermaids take to the line and THE GAME BEGINS. Fortunately, Cooper and Dalton showed up shortly after the game started and gave the Mermaids some hope (insert 3 smile emojis).
Jukebox receives the disc and come out with an aggressive deep huck to speedy JP. Fortunately for the swamp ‘maids, the throw was a little off and disc is turned. Methodical work up the field with sharp cuts and throws from Reagan results in the Mermaid’s first score. And back and forth it goes. Mermaids, perhaps not being accustomed to playing on flat land, have an uncharacteristically large number of turnovers on this 50-min (ok 5 min) point, which tested the conditioning of both teams. The Heroes take several points before the Mermaids get their bearing on dry land and take half. Who knows what happened after that, but the final score was 10-8 Mermaids in this competitive and good spirited game.
A few notable highlights were Dalton making his debut and playing great including a key touchdown saving D. Nathan taking on the tough challenge of guarding Luke all game and doing as well as anyone could have asked. Luke did have a few incredible catches, including a one- handed catch of a deep huck that left many Mermaids perplexed as to how he got there.
Judah again showed up big, making a number of great open field catches along with a few key assists and scores. The play of the game was Tom Brown throwing a beautiful, long flick to a streaking Cooper being guarded closely by Luke. After that play, Anton thought if only he could have done that the previous play. But the three MVPs were Jono (throws were right on target all day), and Asa and Reagan who made sick cuts and great throws all game.
Game 4: Marsh Mermaids vs. Tommy/Max
Final Score: 11-6
The 5 players that represented Tax this weekend played a hard-fought match again the Mermaids, scoring 6 points despite playing down a person the entire game (and eventually playing with 4 people after an injury). Huge shoutout to Clea, Tommy, Munir, Andrew Pohl, and Jake who showed incredible athleticism, resilience, and spirit. For team Mermaids, most notable moments were Nathan Schaller with 2 incredible layout scores, and Jono leading the team with 3 assists, including a beautiful huck to Cooper.
