Week 2
Game 3 In Absentia vs House of Dragonflies
Don’t let Jeff fool you. Their team did not decide to go 5v5 full field to give themselves subs. They made the decision to match our only 5 players because they have the purest of hearts. Full stop.
The game was neck and neck until the score was 3-3. Then the Diehl-DePaul trio turned on, how you say…like Donkey Kong! I swear, Kellie can catch anything. Every time there was a glimmer of hope that we finally forced a turn, Kellie would save their bacon with sure hands and only the smartest throws. Aaaand then there was Jenny Nguy. Only after she scored 3 points on us, did we figure out that we just stay 20 yards deep and allow her to have every under ‘til her heart’s content. HoD took half 6-3. Before taking the field after halftime, both teams joined forces and cheered together for more cloud cover. Love when both teams come together at half. To be honest, during the second half I’m not really sure what clicked for our squad. Maybe it was simply a combination of Jake’s chicken wings that he was slinging like dimes, Clea’s near perfect strike passes to Munir and Tommy, and Andrew Pohl’s deep threats, but somehow, we ended up winning 11-8. Great spirit from everyone on the field. There were high fives and hugs before and after this game.
Game 4 Marsh Mermaids vs In Absentia
Between Asa and Dr. Anton, this team has a strong moral compass and an honorable sense of duty. They also decided to modify their approach to our squad of five. When we had 5 players, they played 6. When we lost Jake due to a sprained ankle, they played 5. Kind to us and fair to their team. HAPPYGILMORE CIRCULAR – YouTube
This team steadily pulled away from us from point one. Simone has hands and is very calm and collected before advancing the disc. We have a future handler in the making with Simone. Nathan lays out…and it is glorious to behold. Reagan has wheels and a well-used library card. Not sure who taught Reagan how to read the disc or if it just comes naturally, but she has the gift. Jono and Cooper decided to switch roles for a point and Jono proved to his team that he is also a thrower and Cooper can not only throw long, he can go long as well.
On our side, Jake threw his last chicken wing for another score to Munir this time, before the ankle sprain he suffered the day before with Oster at a spike ball tournament, forced him to the sideline. (They came in second at the tournament. Congratulations!) From that moment on, between every point, Clea, Andrew Pohl, Munir, and Tommy just looked at each other and said, “Wouldn’t be cool if we just got one more point?” And we did just that until The Marshmaids finished us off 11-6.
This game also included a cheer circle combining both teams at half time along with lots of commingling during timeouts. Asa and Dr. Anton, you both make great captains, and your team is lucky to have you.
